How Can A Nail Prick Wound On The Left Foot Be Treated?

Hello. My Mom pricked her left foot with a rusty nail. She went to the hospital and was given a tetanus shot. They also cleaned the wound and removed a blackish thing. They then gave her antibiotics. But still, the wound has not healed. Around the wound, a sort of lump has formed and is very very hard. We went to the dispensary and they informed us that it s an infection and gave more medicines. They tried to press the wound to remove the puss, but nothing came out. This morning, when I tried to clean the wound, some blood and water came out. Although the lump all around has become a bit soft, that area is still a little bluish. Mom says that the pain has subsided considerably and now, only the wound hurts. I m very worried because I ve heard that if not treated properly, it could lead to amputation of the leg... please advise!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Residual infection suggests a non-healing stage.

I recommend following guidelines for the best outcome at the earliest possible period of time.

- Control of blood sugar (the most important.)
- Local care with sterile dressings.
- Systemic antibiotic as per the wound discharge culture report showing particular sensitivity.
- Regular follow up with her consultant.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
