How Can A Muscle Pull In The Buttocks Be Treated?

I pulled a muscle high in my butt while running 5 months ago. After a few weeks of ignoring it, and continuing to exercise, I saw my doctor, who prescribed two weeks of high dose anti-inflammatory. This did nothing, and I was then prescribed physical therapy. After two months of PT, I still have the pain in my butt. I have followed post-PT stretching exercises explicitly. I can do most exercises (Crossfit) but have avoided anything involving my hamstring. Is there some thing wrong other than a pulled muscle? Shouldn t that have healed by now? I m so discouraged. Thanks, Pat Farmerf YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service. I have reviewed your query and here is my query.

It is possible that other than pulling a muscle in the gluteal area, you may have strained the Sacro-Iliac ligament. The foundation of management is complete rest to the injured ligament and muscle. Please do not do any exercise which will strain these ligaments and muscle groups. Massage can be counter productive, as it can further damage the muscles. Pain medications are of no use. Infra red heat therapy can be done for 15 minutes twice a day. The ligament and muscle will heal depending on the degree of injury, and with complete rest, it may take any time between 2 to 4 weeks or more.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
