How Can A Mitral Valve Stenosis Be Treated?

I am a female, 60 years old who suffered a TIA in May 2017. From CT scan of neck diagnosed with 90% stenosis with blood clot. Currently on Eliquis for 5 weeks and then rescan. My doctor told me I need carotid surgery and have abnormal heart beat. I am scheduled for EP study and might need pacemaker. I am scared because shortly after I will need surgery for carotid artery. Please explain what I should expect

Hello,

Your title is saying mitral valve stenosis but what i think you mean is carotid artery stenosis. If you have over 60% stenosis (blockage) in your carotid artery an operation to reopen the carotid artery is needed to avoid the risk of having a large stroke.

In your case you have a 90% stenosis, already had a TIA (a stroke that resolved in 24 hours) so an operation will definitely reduce the risk of having a stroke. Before the operation you need to be optimised for the this so that is why you might need a pacemaker before.

Irregular heart beats also increase the risk of stroke . Eliquis reduced the risk of stroke if you have an irregular heart beat.
