How Can A Cat Bite Be Treated?

Hi, I went to urgent care earlier after my cat bit me on the hand He prescribed the usual antibiotic. I spoke with 2 nurses prior to seeing the doctor and they said I may need an IV since the swelling came on so quickly. I ve been bitten before. After taking 4 doses of the antibiotic, (yes I took 2 and then 2 more) the swelling is worse and it s extremely painful! Should I wait it out until morning? I ve already needed surgery from a prior bite and I m afraid to let it go....

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Though immediate improvement would not be expected, you should be reviewed since the symptoms are worsening. The antibiotic may need to be switched or additional medication may need to added. Anti inflammatory pain medication may need to be added as well to help treat the pain, that is Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Voltaren.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
