How Can OCD Be Treated While Suffering From Down Syndrome?

My 34 yr old granddaughter, who is Down Syndrome, has suddenly become so obsessed with taking her nightly shower that she sometimes has the shower running over an hour. Last night she got so bad that when her mother turned off the water, she stayed in the shower screaming and crying and it was 3:00 a.m. She had been in the shower for over 4 hours! She did not go to bed until 6 am this morning. My daugher, who is a single Mom is nearly beside herself . J P YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

OCD is quite common among Down syndrome patients and it is often quite difficult to treat in such patients. They might require drugs like SSRIs along with Risperidone. Consult a psychiatrist and he will direct you accordingly.

Wishing all the best.

Thanks.
