Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 98 year old father has a sore on his outside ankle bone which has been diagnosed with a MRSA infection. The first option they offered was amputation of his leg from mid calf down. I of course would not give consent. After 5 days of antibiotics he has improved greatly. The surgeon that wanted to remove the foot is still telling me that the only way to cure the infection is to remove the foot. I find it hard to believe that this is the only option. I can t help but think that there are treatments other than surgery that can work. My dad is in good health and is only on two medications for high blood pressure. I am inclined to continue antibiotics and a wound care specialist. Am I making the right decision.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It is very difficult to give you a definite opinion without knowing your dad's complete history. However, if he is responding well to antibiotics then amputation is not mandatory. Discuss with his treating physician regarding the decision to amputate and how long is it safe to wait.

Dr. Lekshmi
