How Can I Manage Prolonged Dizziness And Clogged Ears When Previous Treatments Have Provided No Relief?

Hi, I have been experiencing dizziness, and clogged ear feelings since April. I have been to urgent care and prescribed antibiotics, I have taken meclizine, and have been to a family nurse practitioner with no satisfaction. Presently dealing with another long wait to see an ENT. Can someone out there please help?

Hi,

The causes for dizziness plus feeling of clogged ears or fullness of ears can be due to problems in the external ear, middle ear or inner ear respectively. For further clarity, I would like to know the age and sex of the patient, and further details about associated symptoms like ringing in the ears, ear pain, hearing loss.

Some of the causes for the above said symptoms can be Meniere's disease, eustachian tube blockade, effusion in middle ear, ear wax, damage to the auricular branch of vagus nerve etc. Meclizine is an antihistamine which helps to control your symptoms (like dizziness / nausea), but treatment of the underlying cause is essential for a complete cure.

I would advice an expert consultation with an ENT specialist and a Neurologist (or an emergency physician/family doctor if there is a long delay in specialist consultation), in view of persistent symptoms because treatment depends on the underlying cause. The determination of the diagnosis needs a detailed clinical examination along with audiometric and radiographic investigations.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Devi Venugopal Rita, Internal Medicine Specialist
