How Can Crohn S Disease Be Treated?

i had vulva cancer and after surgery, I had radiation treatment, this was 12 years ago. since that time, I hae been diagnosed with Crohn s disease. Could the Crohn s be related to the radiation treatment? I have had numerous bowel blockages since the radiation treatment. My GI doctor is questioning whether or not the one has anything to do with the other. Sincerely, Deborah Pasternak

Hi. Welcome to "Ask A Doctor" service. My name is Dr. Rahman, I have read your question and here is my advice.

Unfortunately, the exact cause of Crohn's disease is not known. Many things has been postulated including infection that might trigger it however there is yet no evidence that radiation might cause it, albeit the obstruction can be because of any of the two. Radiotherapy can cause strictures to cause obstruction, the same can be done by Crohn's disease. Therefore, it may be caused by either or both.

I hope I have answered your question. I will be glad to answer any further question about this.

Regards,
Dr. Rahman
