How Can C.difficile Infection Be Treated?

I had terrible diarrhea for about 15 hours the other day (about every 2 hours), then it stopped. I have been okay since. The problem is that I tested positive for c-diff (there was a nurse here for another reason and took a stool sample to the hospital for me). Then I was prescribed Flagyl (sp?). Before I take this, is it possible the stool test was wrong? I had c-diff several years ago, about 4 times and most of those stool tests were negative! Only one showed as positive, but I know they all were c-diff. I am due to have surgery on Tuesday, and I can t wait for an answer from my doc. Can I have surgery with c-diff? Please advise. Thank you.

Hello,

You may repeat the stool sample three times if you got three positive or 2out of three positive means you have to take treatment for it.

It is treated with Metronidazole or Clindamycin for 2-3 weeks then repeat the stool culture and microscopy. If negative no worries.

You didn't mention what type of surgery you're undergoing? If it is minor surgery no problem.

But major surgery then you may need to consult your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
