Hello, I have a grandson that is really struggling with behaving in school. He is 6 yrs. old and I am pretty sure that he has ADHD. His mother and I are trying to find out the best way to help him with this problem. He learns well, when he can slow down and concentrate. Just looking for some solutions. Thanks
First of all, it is very important to know what attention deficit hyperactivity disorder exactly means. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder where the individual has problems paying attention and controlling behaviour.
The first step towards managing ADHD is counseling by a psychologist. It is also important to sensitise his teacher about his condition so that she can also help him to cope accordingly in school. Patience is the key.
There are some medicines to control symptoms like atomoxetine, and alpha 2 receptor adrenergic agonist but they are not the first line of treatment used. Behavioral therapy are used as the first line of therapy.
Various psychological therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy and social skills training are used. You can discuss these with your psychologist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Nazma Amman
