Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to help my dad. He started taking clonidine 6 years ago, and it's gotten to the point where he's taking a quantity of 90 .3mg tablets within a week. When it should last him a month. I'm not sure when or how it got to the point of him taking more than what he was suppose to. But he's having trouble tapering off it at home. And when he stops completely, he starts continuously throwing up until he starts taking it again. It even got to the point where he was hospitalized and his kidneys were starting to fail. Luckily they were able to get his kidneys back to normal, but I've been told they can't taper him off the clonidine in the hospital and unfortunately he doesn't have a primary doctor that is helpful at all. I was just wondering what options my father can try or if there was any suggestions we could try to bring to a doctor.
Any help is appreciated, my dad has had trouble with over using pain medication in the past but my mom and I have helped him to over come that. The clonidine is what we're having trouble with, and I know people assume my dad is trying to get a high from it but that is untrue. He just made a very serious mistake by taking more pills than needed and didn't understand the serious consequences of "being his own doctor." Now it's gotten to the point to where he takes a certain amount each day just not to feel sick.
