Hello, My Father Is 78 Years Old With Advanced MS.
Hello, My father is 78 years old with advanced MS. He has been hospitalized for the last 6 weeks and has had aspiration pneumonia 4 times in this period. He is very weak, Little to no mobility in his left side. Can get around with difficulty with a walker, however only for short distances. Currently he has great difficulty in doing anything unassisted. They have changed his diet to remove liquids. The dr's have indicated that they feel the chronic pneumonia which goes away with antibiotics appears to come back immediately after. They are of the mind that if he gets pneumonia one more time that they will not treat it and instead put him in palliative where they would suspect he would die shortly thereafter. My question is if there is any longer term way of treating the pneumonia with a longer term antibiotic or something. He has deteriorated greatly over the past 6 weeks but previously we would not have supposed that we would be dealing with potential end of life decisions in a matter of 6 weeks.
Appreciate any insight.
Best, Nick Ayre YYYY@YYYY Canada
