Have Swelling In The Index Finger Which Started To Spread Through Out The Hand

I pick up eggs on a line at work. Halfway through the day my index finger was aching a bit, I'm 43 and thought it was maybe arthritis. later in the day my hand started swelling some and I noticed that I could not bend the index finger at the knuckle and there was heat in that area. The swelling spread across the entire hand. It's been 3 days naow and the swelling is down mostly but still cannot bend index finger at the knuckle. The knuckle itself is swollen.
Thank you. Patricia Benson

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description, most propably it could be either due to infection/inflammation in the involved joint resulting in swelling and stiffness.

An xray of the joint is needed to rule out any underlying infection either in the bone or joint.

Use of an appropriate antibiotic along with antiinflammatory medications for a short course should resolve your symptoms. Intermittent moist heat fomentation of the affected area helps in decreasing the swelling.

If your symptoms persist, consult an orthopedic surgeon for further workup and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
