Have Severe Back Pain Traveling To Right Leg. Done CT Scan. Best Treatment Options? Completely Curable?

Hi Doctor,

I am Sanjeev from Delhi. My mother, who is 61 years old has recently developed severe back pain, travelling to her right leg. CT Scan reveals that there are irregular distribution of opposing end plates at L3-L4 levels and mild compression collapse of L4 vertebral body and loss of L3-L4 IV disc space. Degenerative changes are also observed in form of marginal osteophytes and subchoundral sclerosis.

My Doctor is saying that these are the indications of mild tuberculosis of the spine and is putting her on DOT treatment.

Therefore, kindly suggest:
•     What are the best treatment options under these symptoms and
•     Is it completely curable?

Best Regards
Sanjeev

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello Sanjeev
As you mentioned the CT finding which suggest a TB spine. So as of now the the treatment for it will be primarily control the infection. The best out come she can have is no neurological sequel or boney deformity but to be honest the degenerative changes might not reverse to the original condition and she might continue to have the symptom. Even in those scenarios she can have surgical options of fixing the spine. So over all the out come is favorable. I wish her good luck for quick recovery.Get back if you need any more clarification.
Thanking you
