My boyfriend has just come back from his stag weekend where he was given alot of alcohol and ate very little. He has come home today and is suffering with trapped wind in his chest and the feeling of needing to burp all the time. He is in alot of discomfort. He has taken gaviscon and this hasn't helped is there anything else he can do to relieve this. Thanks

Hi,

It appears that your boyfriend is suffering from gastritis which is common after heavy bouts of drinking and occurs because alcohol damages the lining of the stomach. Since just antacids like Gaviscon are not helping, I feel he may need stronger medicines to reduce acid production in the stomach, like H2 receptor blockers (ranitidine, famotidine etc) or proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, pantoprazole etc). Agents that protect the lining of the stomach, like sucralfate and bismuth may also help. He also needs to avoid alcohol and fried and spicy foods till he gets well. It will be prudent to see a doctor, because if it worsens, there may even be bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract.

Hope this helps your boyfriend. Best wishes.
