Hi & Welcome to HCM. I appreciate your concern for the safety of drugs used in the treatment of Crohn's disease.
Skin changes (thinning and purpura) are the most common toxicities caused by steroids for a period of more than three months at high doses. Steroid induced purpura often affects the sun-exposed areas of the dorsum of the hand and forearm.
Usually steroids are given during the acute flare up (exacerbation) of the disease but only for a short period of time and once the signs and symptoms of inflammation resolve, they are gradually tapered off.
Pentasa is less likely to cause the dark spots on the skin. Consult your treating physician/gastroenterologist for this side effect and possible withdrawal of steroids if you do not have acute exacerbation of Crohn"s disease. Hope to have answered your query.
