Does Intake Of Zoloft Cause Weight Gain In A Teenager?

Hi! My 16 year old daughter was just put on zoloft for depression. She is a type 1 diabetic. I am very concerned she will put on weight? Does zolft make you gain weight because it increases your appetite or is it something in the drug itself, or is that a myth? Thanks so much Doctor!

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Among the side effects of Zoloft is rapid weight gain. However, i will say you gain weight only when you eat more than you work, that is, energy from food is more that energy used for your daily activities. The excess energy will be stored as protein in muscles and fat in adipose tissues.Since she is diabetic, i believe she should be on special diet.I will suggest she sticks to dietary advise as given by her nutritionist as weight gain in her condition will not be good. She will not put on weigh if her diet is controlled. She should also get in to regular fitting exercises.Zoloft does not however increase appetite. It decreases instead.
Hope this will help
Regards
