Does Intake Of Plan B After Having Unsafe Sex Cause Any Changes In Ovulation?

I started my period July 1st. I had unprotected sex in the very early morning of July 16th. My partner did not finish inside of me, but I am still worried about sperm in pre-ejaculate. I took Plan B One Step about 5 hours later. How effective is the pill if I am ovulating or have already ovulated?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The emergency contraceptive pills like Plan-B one step prevent an unwanted pregnancy by delaying the ovulation, so if you have ovulated in the last 24 hours then it won't be effective. Otherwise, Plan-B one step within 24 hours of unprotected sex, it is 95% effective in preventing an unwanted pregnancy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
