Does Infected Boil On The Knee Cause Swelling In The Ankle?

I saw my dr last week for a boil on my knee 6 days ago and was given cephelaxin (sp?). The soar is now feeling better, and has begun to come to a head and drain on it s own. This afternoon I noticed swelling in the ankle on the same leg as the sore. Are these related?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Cellulitis, a bacterial infection of the skin and underlying tissue, can spread from one area of the body to another and can cause swelling and redness in the affected area. It is possible that the swelling in your ankle is related to the boil on your knee.

It is essential to keep an eye on the swelling and contact your doctor if it worsens or if you experience any other symptoms. Also, it is necessary to continue taking the cephalexin as your doctor instructed and to finish the entire course of antibiotics even if you are feeling better.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
