Does Xifaxan Help On Decreasing Ammonia Levels In The Blood?

My husband is 56 y/o and has been in the intensive care unit for the past 30 days with cirrhosis of the liver. He developed ARDS and a trach was placed with a ventilator attached. His oxygen level was finally decreases to 20 at this time. His ammonia level is still high @ 185. They continue to administer lactulose daily through the NG tube. I read that xifaxin 550mg po q12h can now be used to indirectly decrease ammonia levels in the blood. Do you have other recommendations and have you heard of xifaxin working well to decrease ammonia levels in the blood?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Lactulose and Xifaxan are both recommended for hepatic encephalopathy, the latter especially if Lactulose on its own isn't enough.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anders Mark Christensen,
General Surgeon
