Does Tramadol Cause Elevated Liver Enzymes?

I took a PHA test and the blood panel came back with a 115 for ALT (SGPT) and 53 AST (SGOT). My previous test result have been well in the normal limits. I did take tramadol three days before blood was drawn. Could this be way the numbers are so high.

Hello,

Yes, tramadol can rarely cause increased serum aminonotransferases (ALT, AST), especially with higher doses or in combination with acetaminophen. Normal ALT/AST levels before tramadol use and increasing enzymes to that levels after tramadol indicate the medicine had damaged some of the the liver cells.
If you do not feel any other symptoms (nausea, fatigue, jaundice) I recommend you to check liver function tests again after 1 week. The levels should come close to normal. Asymptomatic mild increase of ALT/AST after tramadol is usually resolves on its own.

I hope I have answered your question. Please, feel free to ask me more in HCM if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank you,
Malik Amonov MD
