Does Remicade Intake For Treating Crohn’s Disease Cause Excess Fatigue?

My blood work shows that I have too many immature red blood cells in my blood. I am on aziathioprine and Remicade for crohn s. I have been anemic for over 3 years and do not seem to absorb iron well. Since starting remicade, I have been telling my gastro that I just keep getting tireder and tireder. Is my crohn s treatment causing the problem and is there anything I can do to help my body

Hi,

You will have to understand that there are so many factors which cause fatigue and tiredness.

Due to bleeding and resulting anaemia in Crohn's, there will always be fatigue and weakness.

Remicade is also adding to your symptoms as fatigue and weakness are its side effects.

Other causes of fatigue related to Crohn's disease can stem from nutritional shortfalls, including very low levels of vitamin B-12.

Vitamin B-12 is usually absorbed in the end of the small bowel, where Crohn’s disease activity often occurs.

No matter what’s causing your fatigue, it’s important to stay active.

Stretching, light exercise or yoga can help you build strength and boost energy.

If you feel tired all the time, talk to your doctor to make sure you’re doing everything you can to treat all of the symptoms related to your Crohn’s disease, including fatigue.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
