Does Prozac Interact With Concerta?

Hello, I ve been in Concerta 36 mg 5 years ago. (For 2 years) for my add. Than ı stopped it. I am 39, so is it risky to use again on my age. I am smoking cigarettes. Or can ı use it for only 2-3 months . I am on Prozac 20mg for 2 years. How does it work together (Prozac +concerta) for my Depression+ Add? Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
It can cause a life threatening reaction, hence should't be taken together.

Concerta (Methylphenidate) may increase the blood levels and side effects of antidepressant medication Prozac (Fluoxetine) including a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome which is characterized by confusion, hallucination, seizures, extremely high BP, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, shivering, blurred vision, severe muscle stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
In severe cases it may result in coma and death.

Contact your treatomg doctor if you experience increased side effects or your condition changes during treatment with these medications. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.

Hope this answers your query.

Take care.
