Does Namenda Cause Blood Pressure Fluctuation?

We are looking at using a memory drug for my Mother-in-law, who has mild dementia. Namenda is what the doctor recommended, but she had to look up side effects and she saw that it lowers BP. I see that Namenda also has a risk of high BP. Which is more likely? High or Low? Does Severe mean more likely to occur or more likely to be really bad, if it does occur?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Namenda (memantine) is used to reduce the actions of chemicals in the brain that may contribute to the symptoms of dementia in your mother. Yes, it has effect in increasing or decreasing the blood pressure of your mother.

But, since there is not any research on its side effect, we don't know what effects are more likely to occur. I emphasized you to always control her blood pressure at least once a day or when your mom feels not good.

Some tips for you:
• Make sure she eats balanced nutritious food
• Avoid salty foods
• Make sure she gets enough rest

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nurul Falah
