Does Metformin Cause Severe Headache And Blurred Vision?

Hi. This evening I got a very severe headache. Mainly top of head pressure then a few stabbing pains on the right side. My vision also blurred for a while. I am diabetic and switched to an extended release metformin yesterday. When I got up about 30 minutes ago my blood sugar was 205. I am normally around 100 at bedtime. Could the high bg cause the headache ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), can be associated with headaches in some persons so it is definitely possible that this is linked to the headache that you are experiencing.

If the headache is very severe, prolonged or continues to be associated with abnormal sensations then it would be best for you to be seen by your doctor to rule out other causes.
Causes of headaches include migraine, neuralgia (nerve related pain- due to abnormal function of nerves in the area), tension headaches, sinus headaches, a bleed, side effect of medication.

History , physical examination and in some cases imaging by CT, , may be needed to find the cause.
Specific treatment would depend on the cause found

I hope this helps
