Does Mefenamic Acid Affect The Child During Pregnancy?

I took mefanamic acid (250mg) to relief my sore throat from Dec 20-22 and I tried to conceive on Dec 23. On Jan 12 I found out I m pregnant, do you think this would increase the risk of malformation or miscarriage? I had miscarriage before in late Sept last year so I am a bit worried if this would happen again.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Mefenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used for short term treatment of mild to moderate pain.
Mefenamic acid is placed under category C by the FDA. Mefenamic acid is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk. As NSAIDs are known to cause premature closure of the ductus arteriosus, use of mefenamic acid during late pregnancy is not recommended.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
