Does MRI Show The Age Of A Damaged Mcl Or Meniscus Injury?

Dear Orthopaedic Surgeon: Do MRIs show how long ago a damaged mcl or meninscus injury occurred? Sometimes? Almost always? Almost never? And if it is possible to tell how long ago an injury occurred by looking at the MRI, with what degree of accuracy can the age of the injury be determined? Thanks! Jack

Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

Timing of a meniscal injury is not possible using MRI. Only structural details can be commented on in MRI. A recent meniscal tear will show other signs of injury which can be seen and this indicates recent injury. Age of injury is impossible to be declared by MRI.
