Does IV Insertion Cause Swelling And Soreness In The Arm?

was in the hospital a few weeks ago for serious infection that got into my blood. They have me on Ciproflaixn for 25 days to get rid of the infection in prosate and in my blood. while in the hosp they had IV in my right arm for 2 days until it became sore. so they moved the iv to my other arm. meanwhile my vein has been a little sore near the bend in my arm. meanwhile today i got home because it was really sore and noticed my vein was a bit puff or enlarged more than normal. i called my primary care doctor and left a message. should i put ice on it, is it just irritated from the IV s.

Hello,

IV cannula insertion causes pain and swelling in the arm due to inflammation of the vein caused by it. You can use the topical ointment to decrease the pain and swelling.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
