Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. As you said acetic acid will surely soften the wax as it is water based solution. And hard wax in general practice is not removed directly, so ENT physician as per the protocol gave you acetic acid to soften your hard wax, so it becomes easy to remove soft wax.

Even if we try to remove the hard wax without softening, chances are there to cause infection by the procedure. For your knowledge, acetic acid is also used to soften wax.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sameena
