Do Thyroid Nodules Require Six Months Of Monitoring By Physician?

As result of an incidental examination, it has been revealed that I have a 2.1centimeter, and a 4.7centimeter nodules on either side of my thyroid. I have no aggravating problems affecting breathing or swallowing. No family history of thyroid cancer or other problems. Does a regiment of three to six month monitoring by my physician seem a reasonable approach?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The nodules should be evaluated with fine needle aspiration
Thyroid nodules are common among adult people mostly among woman (life time incidence is about 40%). Although most of the nodules are benign any thyroid nodule needs careful diagnostic evaluation.
Any nodule greater than 1 cm should be evaluated by checking thyroid function tests. If the tests show non-functioning nodule it should be biopsied. But any thyroid nodule size (ultrasound confirmed size) is greater than 2 cm should be evaluated by fine needle aspiration.
Both of your thyroid nodule sizes are greater than 2 cm. Therefore, consult with your doctor about diagnostic evaluation of the nodules with fine needle aspiration.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you,
Malik Amonov MD
