Do Tampons Cause Painful Bumps Around The Vagina?

I ve been on my period for over a week due to starting new birth control. I have always used tampons and the past couple days I have two painful bumps right on the edge of my vagina. When me and my husband have sex it hurts. I know I don t have an std because I was just tested when I had my new son. Could it be the tampon causing this bump since this period as been so long? Should I stop wearing them and switch to pads?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Based on your description, it appears that you could be having acute inflammatory reaction in the vagina due to use of tampons.
Kindly do the following to overcome it.
1. Wash the region with mild antiseptic solution like Savlon twice daily.
2. Apply Neomycin with Hydrocortisone over the region after drying.
3. Take antiinflammatory medication like Ibuprofen after food.
4. Use vaginal pH balancing solution like 'V-wash' regularly.
5. Stop using tampons and use pads instead.
6. Abstain from sexual activities till the lesions heal completely.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
Wish you good health.
