Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Dizziness, Swollen Face. No Numbness Or Disfigurement. Neurologist Or Internist?
My wife is 47, good health. She has been getting dizzy spells for the last couple of months. Her dizziness occurs intermittently. Sometimes when she is standing, sitting and laying down. Today she is dizzy and the left side of her face is a little swollen. No numbness or disfigurement. We exercised yesterday for 1 hour at the gym ane she did great. My wife hates the hospital and refuses to go. Her last physical was about 1 year ago.
I have got her to agree with going to a doctor tomorrow. We live in a new town and I am not sure what type of doctor to call. With her symptoms should she see a neurologist, GP or internist?
The characteristics of the swelling are very important. It might be difficult to decide whether chosing an internist or a neurologist for the very start. However, if the swelling is more in the morning and associated with systemic symptoms, the internist would be more proper. This is generally from renal origin. If associated with neurologic signs and symptoms like being dissimilar on both sides and associated with headaches, seeing the neurologist is better.
However, having the internist is a starting point in general is more reasonable to me, especially in this context.
Thanks and kind regards,
Bain LE, MD.
