Could Prolonged Use Of Knee Brace Cause Swollen And Tender Ankle?

I have been wearing a bracketed knee brace for about a month as a result of stress fracture in upper part of tibia. The past few days I ve noticed my ankle (same leg) is swollen and tender. Are the two connected and can I do anything to correct the swelling?

Hello,

You are wearing a bracketed knee brace for about a month. The ankle of the same leg is swollen and tender. Sometimes, when the knee brace is tight, or the inflammation and soreness has not reduced or if the affected leg was not kept elevated, the swelling can increase and affect the ankles of the same leg. The affected knee with the brace should be kept on top of the pillows in an elevated position to help reduce swelling.

Elevating the affected legs helps your blood to flow more easily out of your leg veins and throughout the rest of your body. It aids healing. However, get a follow up clinical examination done to detect swelling, infection or if the healing is well or not. You will be given treatment accordingly. In the meantime take pain relieving medicines and keep the affected knee comfortably on top of the pillows. You will be better.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
