Could Large Tender Bump Around The Belly Button Indicate Hernia?

I have a large tender lump around my belly button, it gets worse during a bowel movement or coughing. I had gall bladder surgery four years ago where it was taken out at the belly button.....could it be a hernia? I am a 43 year old woman and overweight, but the lump is very noticeable.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi there. Yes. It could be incisional hernia. Or hernia through the abdominal muscles. Wear a support for the stomach. Avoid forceful coughing or straining. Get an ultrasound abdomen and consult your Surgeon.

General & Family Physician Dr. Ashakiran S's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing to HCM.
After going through the description, it appears that what you are suspecting could be right.
It could be 'incisional hernia' and over-weight or obesity is one of the risk factor for its development.
Not to worry about it much as it could be easily repaired.
Kindly consult Surgeon for proper evaluation and management.
Wish you all the best.
