Could Growth Of Smaller Tongue Over The Regular Be A Matter Of Concern?

I was looking at my sons throat tonight because it was sore. While looking, my husband noticed something strange we had not noticed before. It looks like he has a small tongue growing on top of his regular tongue towards the back of his tongue. Should I be concerned

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain sore throat along with a growth over the tongue can be due to causes like a Skin tag, overgrown tongue papillae, warts, hemangioma etc..

As it is at the back of the tongue it seems to be most probably hypertropy of the papillae.

I would suggest you to get it confirmed by consulting an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations if needed like biopsy of the growth can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

In case if it is enlarged papillae then it generally gets resolved with proper hygiene maintenance, warm saline gargles and feeding with hard foods as well as treating throat infection that can at times cause inflammation of back of tongue and cause enlargement of papillae..

Other causes will be treated as per diagnosis..

As of now you can make him do warm saline gargles for sore throat, give Ibuprofen to relieve pain and avoid spicy and chilled foods..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
