Child Has Popped Outer Thigh, Iced The Area, Pain During Swinging Motion, Discomfort While Walking. Pulled Muscle?

My 14 year old son was playing soccer and kicked the ball and heard an immedicate pop in his upper outer thigh. He rested and iced for the rest of the day. The day after he felt achiness, but only pain when he does a swinging motion or jumps. He has REAL pain when he does it, but just slight discomfort when he squats or walks. Could it be more than a pulled muscle?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Yes this could be an avulsion of the rectus femoris muscle from its attachment on the pelvis. Diagnosis can usually be confirmed with physical examination and and Xray. treatment is usually non-operative unless the pain continues beyond 2-3 months.
