Can Vigorous Exercise Cause Cold Symptoms To Relapse?

OK, wow! Around Thanksgiving I contracted a cold - ran a mild fever, settled in upper respiratory tract. I shook it after 2 weeks and began my running/exercise regimen. But after one run, my symptoms returned and it took another 4 weeks before I felt well enough to run. That was late December. So last Sunday - 2/14 - I had my best run yet and was very encouraged. Then Sunday evening I developed a cough and on Monday I got hit full bore with the same cold symptoms. My question: Could hard exercise somehow contribute to the return of my cold symptoms? Thanks - steve

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Strenuous exercise can indirectly affect the chances of getting cough/cold because it can potentially stress the body and lead to a temporary decrease in your immunity.

You would still have to come into contact with the virus from some source for the infection to occur.

I hope this helps
