Can Valley Fever Recur?

Can valley fever reoccur? Also 73 cases have shown up in Monterey Co. where we live. We are in a drought and has been very dry for 3 years. Also dusty. Husband had valley fever in 1955 and is on 02 for shortness of breath. Doing tests with pulmonologist but she is not from this area, so just wondering. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. Valley fever, caused by coccidioides fungus, is caused by spores carried by dust. It is not contagious and cannot be spread from people or animals. Once you get over the symptoms it is very unlikely that you will get it again, however recurrence is possible. The best way to avoid getting it again is to strengthen your immunity, because a weak immune system is a favorable ground for this fungus.
Vitamin C tablets and vitamin C rich fruit, good hydration, healthy foods and physical activity are the best way to boost your immunity.
I hope this helps.
Wishing you all the best.
