Can Thyroid Cause Skin Issues?

Hi, My name is Clint. Over the years, I have developed seven different skin conditions that i am currently being treated for by a Dermatologist. I am using a variety of creams, lotions and ointments. I have reached the point where these medications are not healing my skin conditions, only helping to slightly relieve some of the symptoms (itching). My Dermatologist recently recommended light box therapy, which I started about a week ago. I am concerned that there is some physiological condition that is the cause. I did some computer research and found that the thyroid can sometimes be responsible for skin conditions. My primary Physician had blood work done to check my thyroid and reported that my thyroid is fine. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thyroid problems may cause changes in the skin and skin lesions. Generally, the skin gets drier and this favors rashes and other lesions.

In your case, because of the thyroid tests coming out normal, it is unlikely your skin lesions are due to the thyroid.
It is important for you to follow the recommendations of the dermatologist and closely follow-up with him for a better outcome of your skin condition.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Regards,
