Can Taking Provera 10 Mg Stop The Period?

My doctor prescribed me provera 10 mg for 10 days. I m going on vacation for 5 days and my period is due on the first day of my vacation. The doctor said to take 1 pill 1 day before my period for 5 days. My period is normal. Lasts 5 days. The 2nd and 3rd days are heavy. Will the pill stop my period if I just take 1 day before my period is due to start?

Hi& Welcome to HCM.

Yes, it can delay the period provided it should be taken 3 days before the expected period.
To delay a period Provera (medroxyprogesterone) should be taken for 10-14 days starting 3 days before the expected period.
Progesterone is a hormone that sustain the lining of the womb (uterus). Normally at the time before a period there is a fall in the level of Progesterone hormone in the body. When it falls below a certain level, the lining of the uterus is shed as menstrual period.
By taking Provera 3 days before the expected period, the lining of the uterus is sustained until the tablet is stopped.

Hence, it should be taken at least 3 days before the expected period.
The bleeding should start within one week after stopping the Provera.

Hope I could answer your query.
