Can Taking Escitalopram And Risperidone Together Cause A Drug Interaction?

drugs my 44 year old developmentally disabled son is taking metotrolol 50mg 2x per day, enalapril 20mil, amlodipine 5mil, levothyroxine 125 mil, risperidone .5 mil, escitalopram 15 mil. his BP has been out of control the past 5 or 6 months, hence the added med of metotrolol. the dose is to be doubled in a few days to 100 2x per days and I am concerned that the doctor is not requiring him to be checked before increase goes into effect. also concerned about the drug interaction between risperidone and escitalopram regarding the heart. please advise. thank you. Hi,

Escitalopram has an inhibitory effect on the CYP 2D6 enzyme. Risperidone is the substrate for this enzyme. In the presence of escitalopram, there is a rise in the levels of Risperidone, as evidenced by severe extrapyramidal adverse effects at a low dose of Risperidone not normally known to cause extrapyramidal effects.

So better to decrease the dose of Risperidone if you're taking along with Escitalopram. Please consult your physician/psychiatrist they will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
