hi , sorry to hear of your story and i really appreciate your courage , choking or coughing with food means that some food is going into your windpipe , and as the wind pipe is directly connected to the lungs so yes particles can go into the lungs . which some times may cause serious pneumonia so this must be taken care of .i advise such patient to see a gastroenteralogist,he may assess your swallowing and if its not safe ,then their are some ways to deal with it ,if temporary we can put a tube in the stomach for food, sometimes exercise may help , however if permanently damage we may need do a minor surgory that would be placing a tube directly into your stomach throgh a cut into your tummy( called peg tube ) , for food. so you should talk to your doctor and a make a plan ahead ,. good luck . i would be glad if you need any further clarification ,
