Can Ring Worm Infection Be Contracted Through Dirty Linen?

My college age son has been treated for 7 weeks with grisesolvin for ringworm on the back of his head underneath his hair. He returned to college a week into treatment with taking the medication once a day and shampoo that he had used twice before going back to school, and continued with twice a week for the next month. I neglected to tell him that he had to wash his bed linens and towels frequently, and so therefore if he washed them a couple of times in the 7 weeks that was probably it. He is coming home today for a break and I told him to bring all his linens and towels so I can wash them in hot water and detergent and to spray his mattress and anything else his head has touched in his dorm room with lysol I provided for him, (I ve done that in his room at home as well) Will that be enough to disinfect and could he still have or be reinfected with ringworm even though he is on medication, because the linens weren t properly taken care of? (before he went back to school I did not see the rash on his head anymore) He will be done with the grisesulfin in about 5 days.

Hello,

Welcome to healthcare magic.

If your son has taken the course of griseofulvin as prescribed by the doctor, you need not worry so much.

You could just wash his bed linen with regular detergent. That is enough to remove the spores or fungi present.

But ask him to continue using the antifungal shampoo 3 times a week as a maintenance treatment to prevent re-infection.

It is important to avoid sharing combs and similar articles with possible contacts who could transmit the infection.

Hope this helps you.

Take care.
