Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I am 30 weeks pregnant now. I have light bleeding last week and yesterday. Today I went to a different gynae and he injected Proluton and Dexamethasone (2-course). I am very worried if this will anyhow affect my baby. Can you please advise if that was the right procedure to take?
These medicines are considered to be safe during pregnancy. Proluton (hydoxyprogesterone) is a synthetic form of female hormone that is commonly prescribed to reduce the risk of giving birth too early (preterm birth or giving birth less than 37 weeks of pregnancy).
Dexamethasone is a steroid that is commonly given during pregnancy to facilitate the maturity of fetal lungs. It stimulates the production of surfactant in the baby’s lungs and thus reduces the risk of lung problems for babies who are born early, particularly for those born between 29 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. It also prevents colitis and brain hemorrhage in the neonates. There is nothing to worry as these medicines do not cause any harmful effects in the growing unborn baby.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
