Can Ovulation Test Come Negative After Intercourse And Fertilization?
I had a positive ovulation test at 7:35 pm and had intercourse approx. 20 minutes later. I then took another ovulation test the following morning at 9:30 am or so and it was negative. Is it possible that the sperm made it to the egg in time although my test only 14 hours later was negative?
Ovulation kits test for a hormone called LH, which goes up in a surge (a peak, lasting only 12-24 hours) that triggers your ovary to release an egg. Once that egg is released, the signal that makes the test positive goes away, but the egg typically lives for about 48-72 hours inside you, so if sperm are around at that time you can conceive. Sperm also can live in your upper genital tract for up to 5 days, so conception can occur even up to a week in total after intercourse. This is why I recommend that couples have sex every 2 days or do when trying to get pregnant, and it is best to try even a little before your test is typically positive so there are already sperm in your body before your egg is released.
I hope this clarifies things for you and that I was able to answer your question adequately and that this information was helpful.
Best of luck getting pregnant, and take care,
Dr. Brown
