Can Over Dosage Of A Magnesium Supplement Cause Dark And Large Bowel Movements?

I was told a few years ago, after an x-ray, that I was constipated, even though I didn t feel that I was. I started taking magnesium to help but evidently was taking too much and had diarrhea. I am now taking 100mg in the morning and at night. I also have about 2 glasses of wine each night. I noticed about 2 months ago that I was having large bowel movements of very dark, smelly, mushy stools. Also I have extra gas. Could I still be taking too much magnesium to cause that?

Hi,

High magnesium intake can cause diarrhea as a very common side effect. The presence of dark bowel movement brings the need to rule out presence of blood with the bowel movement. I would advise you to talk with your doctor and have a fecal occult blood test to make sure you are not bleeding from your bowel.

If you are bleeding from your bowel (the fecal occult blood test comes out positive) then the doctor might order other tests to find the source of the bleeding and determine the proper diagnosis.
