Can Mild Fluctuation In BP Levels Be Controlled With Diet And Exercise?

My bp ranges from 112/73 as soon as i wake in the morning to abt 130/90 at 3pm. My gp has asked that i take Micardis tablet 40mg/once a day. Is it necessary? I am just starting to make changes to diet (going low sodium) and lots of fruits n veg and regular exercise. Should i make these changes and monitor blood pressure or start taking meds straightaway with dietary changes?
