Can Medicine Be Taken Beyond Date Of Expiry?

I found small box of Neosporin Original Ointment (14.2 g) in my medicine cabinet. Has not been opened. Lot & expiration info on the box is: Lot -2980LZ Expire date- 09/2012
Another number on the box is 0000

Is it safe for me to open & use this product?

I read your query carefully. I would not recommend using that product. If the expiry date was closer, let's say inside 6 months one could dare to use it with good effect (though not recommended) as manufacturers usually leave some months of room to be sure that every batch they put out is effective and safe, but 2 years and a half is a really long long time and I wouldn't use it.
