Can Lomotil Cause Any Birth Defect Or Infertility?

Good evening!! I ll try to be quick. I have a prescription to Lomotil which my Dr. said is an opiate. My wife told me she wants to have another baby, and I was wondering if an opiate could cause a problem with my sperm. I d be devastated if it caused some type of birth defect. Thanks so much!!!

Hi,

Lomotil contains diphenoxylate and atrophine. This drug is prescribed in diarrhea. It acts as an anti-diarrheal agent by decreasing the number and frequency of bowel movements. It slow down the activity of intestines thereby improving the diarrhea.

Lomotil has its action centrally and inhibiting the intestinal contraction thereby controlling diarrhea. There is no proven studies that it affects the baby during pregnancy, if taken by mother. So, it does not affect the sperm quality and also not cause any anomaly in the baby. Anomaly scan during 5th month of pregnancy helps to find out any fetal anomaly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
