Can Iron Supplements Be Taken Before A Colonoscopy?

Hello - I m having a colonoscopy next Friday and the instructions say to NOT take iron supplements a week before the procedure. I do not take any prescription iron supplements, so I m assuming the re referring to overthe counter vitamins, etc. Could you give a few examples or iron supplements. Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, iron should be avoided a week before this procedure. Iron may be found in OTC supplements; there can be a lot of such preparations and cannot be enumerated. The best thing is you see the ingredients of any pack to be sure of it contains iron. You can even avoid taking any multivitamin if it's not mentioned as it won't matter not to take supplements for a week.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
